Will single-payer be good for Vermont?

William Hsiao • APRIL 20, 2014

Harvard's William Hsiao explains the effect he believes that Vermont's plan for health reform will have on the health of Vermonters. He reviews the current academic research showing associations between high levels of health insurance and high measures of vitality (e.g., educational attainment, employment, lifetime earnings), and suggests that expanding coverage in Vermont would also improve such vital measures in the state. Hsiao, who was part of the team that designed the single-payer proposal that has been accepted by the state legislature, outlines his plan and argues that, when implemented, single-payer healthcare will result in cheaper, better, more integrated care.
